Microsoft’s Windows age-awareness APIs show a broader shift toward sharing only the minimum age signal an app needs instead of raw birthdate data.

BleepingComputer reported on September 8, 2026 that Microsoft is adding age-awareness APIs to Windows 11. The feature is designed to let apps understand whether a user is in a broad age range, such as child, teen, or adult, without exposing the exact date of birth to every app that asks.

This kind of platform signal matters because age checks are becoming more common across apps, games, marketplaces, and AI experiences. The privacy question is not only whether age is checked, but how much personal data is copied, stored, and repeated each time that check happens.
